Periodontal disease (gum disease) is the result of a bacterial infection that causes destruction of the bone surrounding your teeth. If we feel that you are suffering from gum disease, we may recommend a more complex treatment. These measures can be instrumental in the prevention of further bone loss and help you retain your natural teeth.
Non-surgical periodontal therapy is a procedure during which the hygienist removes plaque and tartar from below the gum line. Root surfaces are cleaned and smoothed with specially designed instruments. Periodontal therapy entails these basic objectives:
- restore periodontal health
- slow or stop the progression of periodontal disease
- in extreme cases - prepare the tissues for more complex periodontal therapy
